This painting began with a suggestion from fellow artist Robyn Clarke that we take part in the National Insect Expo in Woodend.
That was all the encouragement I needed. I decided to make insects my focus and set myself the challenge of painting twelve different species for the expo — creatures we often walk past, step over or barely notice.
This wolf spider was one of the twelve, and while painting it I discovered just what wonderful eyes they have.
My, what beautiful eyes you have… all eight of them!
Underfoot is a closer look at one of those tiny, extraordinary creatures living right alongside us — and a reminder that sometimes the most interesting subjects are right beneath our feet.
