Meet Roscoe, a rather magnificent pet praying mantis with a face full of personality.
I met Roscoe’s owner at the National Insect Expo in Woodend, where she kindly shared a photograph of him and gave me permission to paint his portrait.
I couldn’t resist those extraordinary eyes!
Rather than painting every tiny detail, I wanted to capture Roscoe’s character through bold, expressive brushstrokes and a playful mix of pinks, oranges, yellows and blues.
The result is a colourful, slightly quirky portrait of a very special little mantis.
Original artwork
